Derek Shepherd To Steal More Hearts At Dapto?

By Stuart Turner

Derek Shepherd is proving as smooth as his TV hearthrob namesake – and co-trainer/owner Bruce Fletcher is hoping his charge can continue making a name for himself at Dapto on Thursday night.

The impressive newcomer, who has chalked up nine triumphs from 14 outings so far, goes in the Rags to Riches Sprint Series Final (520m).

He is named after the character from the American series Grey's Anatomy, one of owner/trainer Julie Fletcher’s favourite shows.

Her husband Bruce said it would be a battle to claim another success.

“It’s a race where any one of five or six dogs can win,” he said.

“Derek Shepherd is a fair beginner (but) he is jumping out of his skin at the moment.

"We're not confident but we are certainly hopeful."

Derek Shepherd goes from box seven aiming for his third win on the spin.

He has two victories from two over the distance at Dapto and has only failed to place twice overall.

The biggest threat in a open race looks like Jewel Action (box four), who has won three in a row.

Box two greyhound Francois Dryva is another sub-30 second performer and has pace to burn.

“I think all the dogs in boxes four-eight can run 5.40 to the first turn,” Fletcher said.

“Whoever jumps out in front and gets to the turn leading will have a big advantage.

Derek Shepherd loves to win. He is a marvellous dog and gives 100 per cent every time.

“Hopefully he can get another one.”

Fletcher said he would shortly target a return to the city for his greyhound.

“It’s probably back to Wentworth Park in a couple of weeks,” he said.

“It’s nice to have a dog who always gives his best. He is a pleasure to work with."

The race is one of ten on offer at Dapto on Thursday night.
