No Slowing Down For Sue Benny

By Stuart Turner

Plenty has changed since Sue BENNY started her racing career but she just keeps going and going.

Nearly four years on from her first race, the veteran campaigner has her 113th career outing at Wentworth Park on Monday night.

She goes in the Macro Meats Veteran Stakes (280m) aiming to continue her recent run of four consecutive placings.

Her trainer Mathew Wotton reckons she may have more good runs ahead.

“I said to the owners about six weeks ago that I was going to put her in one more week in the Masters races in town and that might be it,” he said.

“They came to see her for what they thought was the last time - and she ran about 16.20.

“They said that was one of the best races she had done.

“Every time we think we might retire her, she puts in another good run.”

Sue BENNY had her first race way back in November 2010 at Maitland and has compiled seven wins and 29 placings in her career.

Wotton has trained the bitch, who starts from box four tonight, for about two years.

“She had a couple of bad injuries when she was younger,” Wotton said. “She was off the track for about 12 months after having pups (as well).

“The owners wanted to put her back in work, but no-one would have a go because she’d had pups.

“I thought I’d give her a go.

“She started to put the times on the board and looking handy - and she’s gone from there.”

Wotton said Sue BENNY may be long in the tooth but she acted far younger.

“She’s brilliant,” he said. “If you had a few greyhounds like her, you’d be on cloud nine.

“I think having the time off rejuvenated her – she’s loving it.

“She seems to be thriving on racing, especially at Wentworth Park. She loves it there.”

Kemps Creek-based Wotton has four other dogs going at the meeting, including Brooklyn’s Halo in the same race.

Her best time of 16.60 is dwarfed by the rest of the field but she has placed on five of his last six visits to the Glebe track.

Box two dog Sudden Splash has recorded 16.21 at this distance and has been a handy recent performer.

Ten races are on the card at Wentworth Park and action starts at 7.13pm.
