Storm Still Has The Power

By Stuart Turner

He may be long in the tooth compared with his illustrious rivals but don’t rule Electro Storm out of contention for the mouth-watering Macro Meats Gourmet Game Stakes (520m) at Wentworth Park.

The 89-race campaigner goes from box four in Saturday night’s race up aiming for a 19th win in his notable career.

Some top-class rivals, including the joint 2013 NSW Greyhound Of The Year Double Twist and flying ZIPPING Willow (pictured), lie in wait in what is a high-calibre race.

Electro Storm’s trainer Majella Ferguson conceded it was a tough field, but said her dog should not be discounted.

“I said to someone when I saw the draw, ‘this is more like a Golden Easter Egg Final’,” she said with a smile. “You couldn’t have picked a better race.

“I think I will just enjoy it, rather than worry about it.

“It’s just great (Electro Storm) can still compete at this level.”

Electro Storm has been a decent performer over the years and is still worth consideration.

He has placed on six of his last nine outings at the Glebe track and has a favourable draw in box four.

“The four has been his best box at Wentworth Park,” Ferguson said. “He runs his best from there.

“I think it’s the straight run to the turn. That suits him.

“He has a compact build – he’s only 29 kilos – and managed to avoid injuries, which have helped him.

“He has been a phenomenal dog for me. I wish I had ten more like him.”

With 20 wins from 32 starts, ZIPPING Willow is hard to ignore from box six.

Double Twist (box four) will head out chasing her fourth consecutive victory, while Chica Destacada (box two) already has an impressive best of 29.49 on her record.

“I think you can make a case for any of the eight dogs to win,” Ferguson said.

“Electro Storm seems to have taken to Wentworth Park. I think 520m is just the right distance and speed for him.

“It’s a great race but he has a chance.”

The race is on the same card as the three semi-finals of the Peter Mosman Classic, with action under way at 7.30pm.
