A Blockbuster Day At Richmond?

By Stuart Turner

A change of surroundings can work wonders in the greyhound racing game, as John Chapman can testify.

The 45-year-old, who has Miss Blockbuster aiming for a fifth consecutive win at Richmond this Saturday night, is a born and bred Hawkesbury boy.

Five years ago he left Sydney and moved to a property at Lidsdale, close to Lithgow in the NSW Central Tablelands.

It was a big move but it turned out to be a canny decision.

“It’s the best time of my life,” Chapman said.

“When I was waving goodbye, people were saying it was a crazy to leave Sydney, but it’s been brilliant.

“Since I’ve been here I’ve had about 400 wins. I think I have introduced about 30 people to greyhounds as well.

“I’m loving it.”

The former brickie was around greyhounds as child and has been training the dogs for about 25 years.

“My earliest memory is running around the back yard with a brood bitch we had back then,” he said.

“I love spending time with the animals. It’s good to work with an animal and get results from them.

“I love winning but I get more of a thrill for the owners. I love seeing them enjoying themselves and enjoying the sport as well.”

Chapman is still assisted by Dad Patrick, while wife Skye also lends a hand when needed.

After a solid but unspectacular start to her career, Miss Blockbuster has been flying recently.

She has won twice in decent company at Nowra, as well as triumphing at Dubbo and Wentworth Park.

Chapman is optimistic for another success for his box two dog in the Courtesy Appliance Service Stakes (400m), the first of 10 races on offer at Richmond.

“I’m pretty confident, he said.

“It’s probably not best for her being on the inside but I think she’s got toe to show the others at Richmond.

“She is a pacy bitch (and) she could be the type of dog that steps up to 500m when she gets older.

“We’ll keep her poking along at 400m and see she how she develops.”

Chapman thanked John Brooks and everyone at Team Evolution Window Systems for their support.

Racing starts at 7.23pm.
