Motangi Carries Family Hopes At Wagga

By Stuart Turner

You don't need to tell Jo Smith what a wonderful feeling it would be to win the Graeme Hull Memorial Gold Cup at Wagga Wagga.

Smith, who has Motangi  going from box eight in this Sunday's final of the 525m race, has enjoyed success in the Cup on two previous occasions.

That brace of wins at her local track included a triumph with Wenzke in 2012 - a triumph which still brings a smile to the face of The Rock-based owner/trainer.

"It's an overwhelming feeling to win," she said.

"You know there's some special owners in this race who would be ecstatic to win.

"It's lovely to win and always a good day."

Smith, who also works as an aged care nurse, has been involved with greyhounds for about 40 years.

The 57-year-old currently looks after about 20 dogs alongside husband Brian - the pair met at a greyhound meeting about 16 years ago - and son Nick.

"I think greyhounds are in our blood," she said. "They are beautiful animals.

"You have your ups and downs but it's very rewarding.

"I suppose the dogs do bring us together as a family.

"Sometimes you think it's a pain, but times like this make the hard yakka and commitment worthwhile."

Motangi has been a decent campaigner for the Smiths, with seven wins and three other placings from 19 career outings.

He has won on all three starts from box eight - including two at Wagga - and Smith is content with the draw.

"When we were waiting for the box draw, my son said, 'you two are pacing around like there's a baby due'," she said.

"If you can't have the inside, eight will do. It suits Motangi as he can keep out of trouble.

"He was broken in at the track (as well), so he knows how to race there."

Smith said she was on tenterhooks before Sunday's race, which offers $10,000 to the winner.

"I'm actually quite nervous," she said.

"I'll let Motangi think it's just another race. His owners can have all the butterflies.

"I just wish everyone involved good luck."

The race is the last of eight on the card, with action under way at 5.02pm.
