Young And Old Do Battle At Dapto

By Stuart Turner

Youth will trump experience in Thursday’s Sportingbet Series Final at Dapto, according to Judith Fisher.

The South Nowra trainer has two dogs in the fifth grade 520m final, with 18-race newcomer Cool Cat Charlie and 89-race veteran Swift Design among the strong field.

Both dogs have been in good form recently but Fisher believes Cool Cat Charlie is the better bet from box two.

“He has got that early fast speed,” she said.

“He got injured at Bulli (last month) but he absolutely flew there.

“He is absolutely desperate for the rail so hopefully the draw will suit him.”

Cool Cat Charlie endured a slow start to his racing career but has improved since the turn of the year and has placed on all three previous visits to Dapto.

Swift Design only has eight career  wins and 32 placings to her name but has also picked up in recent months.

Fisher said her charge, who has a decent record at the track over the distance but has been mediocre from box eight  over the years, was worthy of consideration.

“The older she is getting, the better she seems to be racing,” Fisher said.

“I don’t think box eight will bother her (although) she loves the fence.

“She tries her heart out and is a good little dog.”

You would be hard-pressed to find a more enthusiastic trainer than Fisher, who has been involved with greyhounds for more than 30 years and can never resist spoiling her dogs.

“I just love the animals,” she said.

“I get really annoyed when people say they must be vicious because they wear muzzles.

“They are beautiful animals – they just want to sleep on your lounge or on your bed.

“All my children are grown up – my youngest is 31 – so my dogs are like my kids now.

“As long as they get round safe and try their best, they always get their ice cream at the end of the race.”

Fisher said box three dog Eddard Stark, who has placed in all five races so far for trainer Kenneth Burnett, was also one to watch.

The race is the sixth of 10 on offer at Dapto.

Action starts at 7.28pm.
