Back To Earth For Space Star

By Stuart Turner

Space Star produced an out-of-this world performance last time out and will look to continue his good form in the Australian Colour TV Stakes (618m) at Richmond today.

The Dawn Garrett-trained speedster picked up his fourth win in seventh starts in impressive fashion over 520m at Wentworth Park last time out, coming from the back of the field to produce a stunning victory.

Today, Space Star returns to the track and distance where he made his race debut in March, where he stunned onlookers by breaking the track record with a time of 35 seconds flat.

Garrett hopes another outing at Richmond will be another stepping stone to future success.

“We are hoping he goes right to the top,” she said.

“The way he is going, he may have two or three Group wins in him. He is getting better with each run and learning what he needs to do.

“He is a good dog and hopefully going places but we will take it slowly and try not to rush him.”

Space Star has picked up other impressive wins at Gosford, Richmond and Maitland and should be a class above this field.

His dam, Tonto Tears, enjoyed a successful career at fourth and fifth grade but Space Star is already promising more than that.

Central Coast-based Garrett said her charge was also a pleasure to work with.

“He is a very funny dog – very demanding,” she said.

“When we give him a run at home and he wants to come back inside, he will stamp his feet and start barking. He is a lovely dog with a great temperament and quite a character around the kennels.”

Garnett said heading back to Richmond was part of a cautious approach with the dog.

“He has the ability. You just hope everything stays in place," she said.

“We will take him through the grades, see how he pulls up and decide where to go from there.

“We’ll probably take him up to 700m in two or three months’ time but there’s no big hurry.”

It should be a memorable day at Richmond, with recent Group 3 Evans & Son Jewellers Ladies Bracelet winner Zipping Willow also getting an outing in the Angostura LLB Stakes.

Other notables include promising Up and Under (race seven) and Estelle Star, who has six wins from her last eight outings.

She goes from box six in the 10th and last race of the day.

Action starts at 3.32pm.
