Minnie Aims To Banish Debut Blues

By Stuart Turner

Minnie Jayda had a low-key debut at Lismore but owner/trainer Cary Grant is confident of much better things second time around.

The promising dog, named after Grant’s beloved granddaughter Jayda North,  makes her first appearance over 520m in the Summerland Trophies/M & T Tyres on Tuesday night.

She has three wins from her first five starts but disappointed on her opening appearance at the same track in April, only finishing  fifth over 420m.

With more experience and good trials now under her belt, Grant is confident of a better outing this time around.

“She got caught up in her box, didn’t jump and that was the end of it,” he said.

“We have trialled her at Lismore and she has gone well.

“If she does everything right then I think she will win the race.”

Minnie Jayda will start from box four and should face a stern challenge from flying Mal Rose Hi.

He goes from box three and will be bidding for his third win in a row.

Minne Jayda’s dam Flying Loren was a decent country performer and Grant has high hopes for his latest charge.

“She will definitely be city class,” he said.

“I’m really pleased with how she is developing.”

Grant, who is based at Chinderah, close to Tweed Heads, was introduced to dogs about 40 years ago by his brother.

The 65-year-old, who is assisted by wife Larraine, said he loved working with dogs and snaring success.

“I like the nature of the dogs,” he said.

“I like the enjoyment of seeing them go round.

“I love the thrill of winning. It doesn’t matter if it’s a maiden or a feature race for me.

“That’s what keeps me going.”

The race is the third of 10 on offer at Lismore and is off at 7.23pm.
