Peter Mosman Hopes Impress At Wentworth Park

By Jeff Collerson

Cawbourne Whip and ZIPPING Delta roared into calculations for this Saturday's Group 1 Rapidvite Peter Mosman Classic heats with sensational wins at Wentworth Park.

The Jason Mackay-trained ZIPPING Delta bettered champion Double Twist’s winning time on Saturday when she ran down the Rockhampton Cup winner Miner’s Moss to win a fifth grade 520m race in 29.59.

But Cawbourne Whip trumped that by taking out a similar class race in 29.38, just 0.31 outside Shakey Jakey’s track record.

Before Cawbourne Whip’s race her trainer Jodie Lord was so confident she would win that she told yours truly her bitch would run no worse than 29.60.

That might have seemed like a case of a trainer getting carried away but Jodie’s judgment was not only spot on, she actually under-estimated just well Cawbourne Whip would go.

Cawbourne Whip will now target the Peter Mosman heats, as will ZIPPING Delta.

ZIPPING Delta’s trainer Jason Mackay said the daughter of Bekim Bale has improved markedly in recent months.

"She made a few mistakes early in her career and has been on a learning curve but is now putting it together," he said.

"I wasn’t surprised at her time tonight because prior to the Richmond Oaks heats on May 10 I trialled ZIPPING Delta at Wentworth Park and she clocked 29.52."

Tommy Brislane will also tackle the Peter Mosman series after his all-the-way win in a personal best time of 29.74 on Saturday at Wentworth Park.

After the race trainer Steve White said he believed the dog could go a bit faster.

"He had not been around Wentworth Park for six weeks and I thought he hesitated slightly as he went through the catching pen, which, given the break away from Wenty, was not totally unexpected," Steve said.

In other action at Wentworth Park, bookmakers "took on" Kicking Rocks and paid the price when the Ryan Tredway-trained dog overcame a first turn collision to win by five lengths in a tidy 30.10 on Friday night at Wentworth Park.

Kicking Rocks looked the class runner in his fifth grade race but was drawn to find trouble in box two.

Fast beginners Teddie Boy, Cosmic Himm and Melissa’s Memory, all good railers, drew boxes one, three and four respectively while Kicking Rocks is inclined to move wide in the early stages.

Teddie Boy jumped in front from Melissa’s Memory and when Kicking Rocks ran out and collided at the first turn the hot favourite looked gone.

Teddie Boy, having his 110th start, raced away with a five lengths’ break on the back straight but just as the veteran looked set to score his tenth race win, Kicking Rocks emerged from the pack into second place.

He rounded up Teddie Boy easily to lead turning for home, before careering away for Friday night’s most impressive win.

Kicking Rocks will be the one to beat in this week’s Schweppes Sprint Series final, especially if he draws wide.

See you next week!
