Snoop A Cup Chance

By Jeff Collerson

My Boy Snoop has drawn box one in Wednesday night’s Group 3 Sportingbet Bulli Gold Cup final but trainer Anthony Azzopardi says he would have preferred box eight.

"I would have loved to see him in box eight but having said that, box one is next best so I’m not complaining," Anthony said.

My Boy Snoop was bred and is owned by Deborah and Brett May and has always displayed outstanding ability, but until recently often found trouble and was beaten by inferior dogs.

"When Brett and Deborah were training him, My Boy Snoop clocked 29.90 in his first trial at Wentworth Park so he could always run," Anthony added.

"Since I’ve been training him I haven’t done anything different but I think it has just been a matter of My Boy Snoop maturing.

"Put it this way, the penny has finally dropped with him."

My Boy Snoop came from last to run down tearaway leader Unleash De Fear in his Cup heat at Bulli last Wednesday night but Anthony conceded the small field of six worked in his dog’s favour.

Sue BENNY, a gift to her four owners, scored her second Wentworth Park win at the ripe old age of five years and three months last Monday night, while remarkably, three of her offspring contested later races.

Unfortunately Orpheus (race two), Avatar Priness (three) and Sheila BENNY (race five) did not win and give the story a fairytale ending but it is noteworthy that a winning bitch should also be represented by three of her progeny on the same card.

Sue BENNY is trained by Mathew Wotton for Chris Panayi, John Kolleti and Tas Flakos and his son Costa, who were gifted the greyhound as a puppy by breeder Mick Abbott, who trained the great Token Prince.

"We had bought a pup from Mick but when it didn’t work out with that youngster he kindly gave us Sue BENNY as a replacement," Tas said at Wentworth Park.

“Sue BENNY is a litter sister to Chenzhou Boy, who won $100,000 in prizemoney for trainer Luke Azzopardi, which is why we decided to breed a litter of pups from her."

Trainer Mathew Wotton added: “When her pups, sired by Hurricane Luke, were three months old, Sue BENNY was so over-the-top that the owners felt she needed to be put back into work to keep her happy."

Sue BENNY’s win on Monday was her seventh at race number 110 and took her earnings to more than $14,000.

She overtook pacemaker Point One Back on the home bend to win the 280m Macro Meats Master Veterans in a tidy 16.29, only 0.06 outside her fastest Wentworth Park figures recorded in December.

I’m Pedro, who scored his fourth successive win in posting a brilliant 30.01 at Nowra last Monday, will have a fortnight’s respite before being prepared to give his 73-year-old trainer Syd Wales his first Wentworth Park success.

And when I’m Pedro won at Nowra he became the fourth recent individual winner from three different litters whelped by Bob Jackson’s outstanding brood bitch Dawn’s Memory.

The winning sequence began with Bob’s veteran sprinter Emily Dawn winning at Wentworth Park on April 28.

Emily Dawn is from Dawn’s Memory’s first litter, while Paula Dawn and Bobby Dawn then won from her second litter, and at Nowra on Monday both I’m Pedro and Telopea Dawn, from her third litter, were successful.

"I began training greyhounds when I was in my 30s but had a long break from the sport due to work commitments," Syd Wales said.

"For the past 10 years Bob Jackson, who owned Dawn’s Memory, and I have been helping each other out, and I usually handle Bob’s dogs for him on race night.

"Even though I’m Pedro ran 30.01 at Nowra I think there is more improvement in him because he is only 22 months old.

"I intend to give him a letup and then give him a post-to-post hit-out at Wentworth Park before trialling him from the 520m boxes and hopefully watching him give me my first city winner there."

Surprisingly a greyhound with an almost identical name, the Brett May-trained I’m A Pedro, finished second and eighth in two Wentworth Park races on May 5 and 9 respectively.
