No Peter Mosman For Can Of

By Jeff Collerson

Can Of tore a pin muscle at Wentworth Park on Saturday night and will miss next month's heats of the Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic.

Beau Hedley’s brilliant speedster had been one of the early favourites for the Peter Mosman Classic, but the dog will now be out of action for six weeks.

“John Newell, the veterinary surgeon at Wenty, said he believed Can Of had pulled a muscle in his stomach when he came out of the starting boxes in Saturday’s Rapidvite Sprint Final and then tore the pin muscle in a shoulder at the first turn," Beau said.

Kicking Rocks came from fourth in the middle stages to win the race for Ryan Tredway, a department store manager who trains greyhounds as a hobby.

From the night's other results, Belfast Kaiser turned trainer Troy Vella's fortunes around, recording his third Wentworth Park win.

Vella revealed that Vic Peters Classic winner Belfast Johnny - a litter brother of Belfast Kaiser - has had another injury setback.

"He has now torn a hip support and I’ve decided to give him three months off and hope time will do the mending," Troy said at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Vella said he also almost scratched Belfast Kaiser from Saturday's race at Wentworth Park.

Belfast Kaiser pulled up scratchy after he finished third at Wenty last week and when he still looked ordinary on Wednesday I contemplated pulling him out of this race," he said.

“But when I studied at the field and his draw I decided to wait until the last minute to see how he looked and as he seemed okay he took his place and won.

Vella added: "Belfast Kaiser is a handy dog but Belfast Johnny is in another league, he is a freak."
