Tiggerlong Amigo Primed For Derby Victory

By James Broadhurst
Tiggerlong Amigo can take advantage of kennelmate Keybow’s absence from the Britton’s Formal Wear WA Derby (530m) to record the biggest win of his career when the Group 2 feature is contested at Cannington on Saturday.
Perth Cup winner Keybow’s late scratching prior to last weekend’s heats has created a big void in the series but fortunately for trainer Darren McDonald it looks as though Tiggerlong Amigo is more than capable of filling that void.
The improving white and black chaser qualified as the fastest runner for the final with an imposing effort to claim his heat by over nine lengths in 30.31.
He’s now saluted in five of his past six attempts and will be hard to beat even though he jumps from a wide draw.
Tiggerlong Amigo’s most likely challengers are Full Of Beans and the David Hobby-trained pair Panther Monelli and Prang Monelli.
Full Of Beans won his sixth race in only his nine attempt when he toughed out a narrow heat victory in 30.84 but he’ll probably need to improve on his personal best of 30.68 to take home the trophy here.
Panther Monelli and Prang Monelli are well drawn in boxes one and two respectively.
Of the pair, Prang Monelli’s 30.66 heat win was the more notable effort and he’s got the experience and the strength to play a role if things go his way.
Hillbilly Flash comes into the 530m Free To All on the back of two exceptional wins over On Coin and he confirmed his supreme position in this field when he drew the cherry, from where he is undefeated in three attempts.
There’s always been a top notch racedog lurking inside Hillbilly Flash and that brilliance has been on display in the past couple of weeks with back-to-back runs of 30.34 and 30.24.
A similar sort of effort and he’ll chalk up another win here.
