The Need For Speed

By Jeff Collerson
Senor Speedy is back at Wentworth Park on Saturday night after an exasperating sequence of four injuries which have kept the smart youngster sidelined since January.
The Simon Rhodes-trained dog has drawn ideally in box one in the petsnacks.com.au Stakes and despite being off the scene for so long Senor Speedy is going well.
“I would say he is a tenth of a second off his best,’’ Simon said this week.
“The best time Senor Speedy had clocked in trials at Dapto during the period he won two of his four Wentworth Park starts was 30.17.
“I trialled him last Friday and he clocked 30.26 or 30.28, I can’t remember exactly but it was around a tenth outside his quickest time.
“Since he last raced in January Senor Speedy has had a torn groin muscle, a torn hip support, an injured fibula and a hairline fracture in a hock.
“But box one is a big help on Saturday and I have also drawn the rails with Rain Bale in an earlier race so maybe my luck is changing.’’
Promising Kicking Rocks is well drawn in box seven in Saturday night’s Rapidvite Sprint Series final but even his trainer Ryan Tredway concedes his dog might be running for the $1,550 second prizemoney.
“I think Kicking Rocks will handle box seven and will improve on his close second behind Tainted Luke in his heat,’’ Ryan said.
“The only time Kicking Rocks had seen Wentworth Park before last Friday’s heat was in a post-to-post hand-slip three months earlier when he clocked 24.50.
“But Kicking Rocks is still very green in a field and he faces a tough job to beat Can Of, even though that dog has box eight.
“Can Of came out under the lids to win his heat in easily the fastest time and his splits were blistering so realistically he looks an over the line job to me.’’
Best value bet on Saturday is the perfectly positioned Kobi Jay who has box eight in the Follow Us On Facebook Stakes.
Kobi Jay’s box manners can be erratic but if he steps away on terms with his rivals he should win.
He made full use of a similarly wide box seven draw at Wentworth Park last Saturday night when finishing third to Pride Of Mykonos and Scout’s Gold.
Kobi Jay had been last on the back straight but would have won had he not been crowded when in fifth spot, and coming fast, on the home bend.
His opposition on Saturday is no stronger and Kobi Jay is going to be great each-way value.
Anyone who witnessed My Awesome Opal’s brilliant all-the-way win in a heat of Wednesday night’s Bulli God Cup will surely want to be on the Marie Burton-trained bitch in Saturday’s far easier Adopt A Greyhound Stakes at Wentworth Park.
My Awesome Opal was sent out a $32 chance because she was facing a top notch lineup at Bulli but she beat her rivals on their merits and plummets to fifth grade company on Saturday.
At her only Wentworth Park run My Awesome Opal was a luckless fifth to Freddy’s Smile and she meets lesser opposition on Saturday.
