Derenger Looks To Stay Unbeaten

Young greyhound Derenger is looking to make it four wins from four career starts when she lines up in race 10 at Bathurst today over the 307m.

The Christine Oldfield-trained chaser will have her first start at Bathurst, with her three careers starts to date all being at Bulli.

Oldfield has no concerns about Derenger handling the Bathurst track as the daughter of Spring Gun did much of her schooling in the NSW Central-West.

"The owner (Richard Board) is based around the area and because of that she was broken in on the Bathurst track and had a lot of her early education there," Oldfield said.

"I don't think she will have any problems moving from to Bulli to there and she should handle it well.

"She knows the track very well and that's why I thought it would be a good place to give her a run.”

Derenger will jump from box two in today’s assignment.

"She likes the inside draw but with these 300m races it's jump and run so there's probably not much advantage for her from the draw,” Oldfield added.

"She's shaping up to be one pretty handy little bitch though. We're delighted with the way she has started her career and all the indications so far are that she will only continue to improve."

Derenger’s impressive start to her career bodes well for Spring Gun (pictured), with his first progeny just beginning their race careers now.

Oldfield trained Spring Gun – who won the 2011 Vic Peters Classic – so knows the bloodline well.

"I think Spring Gun is just going to be an enormous sire. These are just his early ones coming through now, there's still a lot to come," she said.

"I've spoken to quite a few other people who have told me that they also have good Young ones out of him. All of them are quite a lot like Spring Gun. They all seem to have gotten his pace."

As well as Derenger, Oldfield also trains two of her littermates - Spring Ricky and Kevlarr – who are also both undefeated in their short careers.

"Spring Ricky is unbeaten in his two career starts and Kevlarr has won three from three,” Oldfield said.

"All of them are just doing everything right at the moment. They are racing well and running good times."

Despite the boom start from the litter, Oldfield is reluctant to get ahead of herself and wants to wait and see a little bit more from the greyhounds before she gets too excited.

"Like any Young dogs, you have to start them off easy and just see what their made of. You can't push them too hard because it's a long road to get them fit and sound.

"I just hope they keep progressing well and can continue with the early form they've shown."

Oldfield is optimistic however and thinks they all could be special greyhounds in the future if everything works out well.

"The way they are going, they could certainly be group race standard greyhounds," she said.

"It's only early days yet and none of them have been around two turns so that's probably the next step for them.

"Derenger and Kevlarr have only raced over the 400m so far and Spring Ricky has only had the one run at 472m so we'll gradually progress them up over longer distances."

Tonight could be the start of a successful week for Oldfield, with Spring Ricky also engaged to compete in race 4 at Bulli where he will jump from box eight.
