On Coin Looking To Go Back To Back

By James Broadhurst

Comeback chaser On Coin is on target to claim two feature races in row when he enters a heat of the Sandi’s Me Mum Memorial (530m) at Cannington on Saturday.

The speedy brindle from John Crossley’s kennels returned from a three month lay-off as strong as ever when he captured the Lew Dorsa Memorial with a brilliant and gutsy effort last week.

On Coin ran down a gallant Te Amo and was able to hold out a late charge from Zelemar Fever to claim the silverware in a very slippery 30.10.

Barring a catastrophe, On Coin should canter into next weekend’s Sandi’s Me Mum final as there are only two heats with seven chasers each.

Whether or not On Coin goes into the trophy decider as a winner is another matter as he meets some decent racedogs here but he should have them covered from his inside draw.

A trio of Linda Britton-trained chasers are the most likely to cause him grief.

Bekim Maxin will appreciate the pole and is racing well but this is a step up for him.

Likewise, last start Mandurah winner Rapido Kid has been posting good results but those have also come against lesser opposition.

The main threat to On Coin’s prospects is Star Recall.

She missed out in the Lew Dorsa but if she pings she could find the lead even from her wide alley.

The second heat (race 7) shapes as a ripping contest with Britton kennelmates and noted ‘beginners’ Te Amo and High Recall set to clash for the early lead.

If they both jump to the best of their abilities it is going to be an electrifying run to the post the first time.

Stangafied is no slouch for early pace either and although he is not as quick as Te Amo he may not need to be with the advantage of the rails alley.

This much improved chaser from Brad Yates’ team has won four of his past five and has been clocking times that suggest he is a big show here.

Bingle Monelli has shown great form and could be a factor with the right run.

Since winning at Free-To-All level early last month Celtic Coin has finished downfield in his past four starts but he has an edge in experience and he does have a knack for producing surprise wins so a forward showing would not be a shock although jumping from the pink does him no favours.

After terrorising the local staying ranks with four wins on the trot over the 715m journey, Takahashi drops back to the 642m for the Gibbons Holden Gosnells Grade 5 (Race 5).

She’s only had one crack at the '600' before, but she was equally effective on that occasion, winning in 37.08, and she should chalk up another victory here.

Ritza Liam makes his debut over the distance and he is a strong run-on type so I like him to grab a spot on the podium.
