Shakey Jakey Scratching "Precautionary"

By Jess Moran

It was a mixed day for David Pringle on Thursday with another of his greyhound's from the boom Collision x Kiacatoo Pearl litter breaking a track record before the Clergate trainer made the decision to scratch Shakey Jakey from the Group 3 Sportingbet Magic Maiden series.

Pringle said the decision to scratch Shakey Jakey (pictured) from tonight's semi-finals of the Magic Maiden series tonight was simply "precautionary".

The new Wentworth Park track record holder was involved in an incident in the catching pen after winning his heat last week. He recieved a bump to his shoulder when another dog collided with him.

"It's not a serious injury. You probably could have worked on him over the week and almost had him ready for the race but I just don't want to risk it," Pringle said.

"You need to protect the dog first and foremost and we'll get him 100% right before we look at racing him again."

Despite his disappointment about the scratching, Pringle was delighted with the run of Shakey Jakey's littermate Long Range, who broke the 516m Dubbo track record.

Long Range lowered the exsisting track record of 29.70, setting a new benchmark of 29.63.

Pringle admits that although the performance was not as impressive as Shakey Jakey's, it was still a special run.

"It's still a thrill whenever one of your dogs breaks a record," he said.

"Long Range is not in the class of Shakey Jakey or Master Shot but he's right there behind them.

"We trained Midnight News who held the track record before Long Range and she was an extremely fast bitch.

"She ran a 29.45 around Wentworth Park, so for him to take quite a bit off her record was impressive.

"I don't think he could match Midnight News' time at Wentworth Park because he doesn't particulary like the track, but he just loves Dubbo.

"Everytime we race him there, he just goes beautifully. There's something about the joint.

"The draw suited him yesterday as well. He just loves the rails."

While Pringle has a short-term plan in place for the dog, he doesn't know where the greyhound may end up after that.

"We'll give him a few more goes around Dubbo before we maybe look at heading to places like Bulli or Maitland with U-turn tracks which we think might suit him," Pringle said.

"I thought Richmond would have suited him down to ground, but when he raced there but he didn't handle that as well as I thought he would. Maybe it might when he gets a bit more experience under his belt."

Meanwhile Old Mexico, another litter brother to Shakey Jakey and Long Range, will line up from box one in the first semi-final of the Magic Maiden tonight at Wentworth Park and Pringle is expecting to see a solid performance.

"Old Mexico is being trained by Toby Weekes and he's actually a pretty handy dog," he said.

"Toby has been telling me the times he has been trialling around the joint and they've been impressive.

"He's got box one so we are expecting him to put in a really good run tonight and hopefully progress through to the final.

"There are two other dogs from that same litter here at out property. Both of them have had a few injury dramas recently but when they get right, they'll be pretty handy dogs as well."

While the quality of Pringle's litter has shocked many people, the trainer admits that there were a few early indications.

"We worked out this morning that the mother of this litter Kiacatoo Pearl has produced seven track records out of her three litters," he said.

"She had a few group winners from her first couple of litters and now she has produced this last litter which are probably her best yet.

"The ability is definitely coming from the bitch, there's no doubt about it."
