Hooksy The Stand-Out In New Sensation Heats

By Ellen Dwyer

The 2014 Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg carnival opened in sensational style, with the eight heats of the Group 3 Macro Meats New Sensation, headlining the Friday card at Wentworth Park.

Open to runners 27 months of age with no more than ten race wins from no more than 20 race starts at nomination close, the series attracted a host of boom up and comers. It was however, Victorian prepared, Hooksy that stole the show in the opening round posting a 29.44 victory.

Starting a short priced favourite, the Tanya Auld trained runner didn’t disappoint those willing to take the red odds, spearing the lids to post a first section of 5.37, the son of Hondo Black x Uno Witch continued to put space on his rivals, recording at 13 length victory.

Talking after the race, mentor Jimmy Auld, said that Hooksy had been targeted to the New Sensation given his lack of experience in the higher grades, but he was excited of what might be still to come.

Other impressive runs in the first round of qualifiers included Silent Effective and Fusaichi Kahn which both recorded sub 30 second wins.

Renowned for being awkward early, Silent Effective made the most of his box one draw to punch out sections of 5.45, 17.97 and an overall time of 29.54, the next best time behind Hooksy.

For John and Glenda Dart prepared Fusaichi Kahn, the blistering 5.31 early section was most pleasing for connections with the overall clock being stopped at 29.71. The seven length victory ahead of Secret Shot and Waymore’s Blue will have the Queensland runner primed for next Friday’s semi-finals.

With first through to four progressing through to next Friday’s four semi-finals, more sensational racing is sure to be enjoyed in the Macro Meats New Sensation series.

Wentworth Park will back up again tonight (April 5) for the heats of the Group 1 Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg, with 10 heats set to dazzle racegoers. Patrons are reminded gates open at 5.30pm with the chance to win $250 on course, plus other prizes.
