It's A Recall Battle All Over Again

By James Broadhurst

Exciting littermates Star Recall and High Recall will contest another round of their ongoing and enthralling sibling rivalry in the final of the Gibbons Holden Puppy Classic (530m) at Cannington on Saturday.

The Linda Britton-trained duo are the standouts in what is a quality field of youngsters.

High Recall (box five) and Star Recall (box eight) are not well drawn but both have proved in the past that they have enough early pace to the fire to the front from any position on the grid.

Once again it is hard to separate the pair.

Star Recall (pictured) beat High Recall last week to come into this at the fastest qualifier but High Recall bested her sister in the Canning Trophy final the week before.

This is not necessary a two dog race, however, as other greyhounds can come into play depending on what happens in the all-important run to the post the first time.

If Stanga Tom begins well enough from the red he can be a nuisance and he might open things up for the other chasers while Gone To Heaven is quick enough to potentially grab the lead for herself.

After finding himself in trouble Stangafied won with sheer brute strength last weekend.

He certainly will not lead but if he can stay in touch in the front runners Stangafied will come rattling home.

There is a fair bit of interest in the staying ranks at the moment and even though the 715m Free To All (race 7) only has a small field of six it figures to be a ripping contest.

Galaxy finalist Ash Flash returns to headquarters after a couple of solid efforts at Mandurah and from the red she has very good prospects.

With two wins from his past three starts over the trip Houdini Monelli looks to have finally established himself as a ‘700’ dog.

Houdini Monelli has broken 42 seconds twice in the past month and although he could not find a way into his race last weekend he is generally thereabouts.

Reverberate broke through for a long overdue victory last start and the quick jumping black bitch very rarely misses a podium finish.

Magpie Bob takes another important step towards working his way back into form and fitness as he has his first start over the journey since December.

WA’s representative in last year’s Nationals has had two starts since returning from an injury enforced layoff, both over the 530m.

If he was at the top of his game Magpie Bob would be the one to beat here but he might need another run or two under his belt before he gets back to his best.

Em Three is better known as a middle distance chaser but he did win at his last attempt over this journey three runs back and his form remains very solid.

A greyhound destined to join those dogs at Free To All level sooner rather than later is Takahashi.

Takahashi made an impressive debut over 715m last weekend and she should follow up with another victory in the Grade 5 715m (Race 9).

She clashes once again with Luba Monelli, a greyhound I thought was touch disappointing last week.

Coming off five straight wins over the 642m Luba Monelli led early stages and looked superb throughout the opening half of the race but she ran out of puff and was given windburn when she was passed by Takahashi in the back stretch.

Hopefully she will be stronger this time around.
