Recall Clash In Puppy Classic Heats

By James Broadhurst
A week after their epic clash in the final of the Canning Trophy, gifted littermates High Recall and Star Recall square off once more in a heat of the Gibbons Holden Puppy Classic (530m) at Cannington this Saturday evening.

The pair staged an enthralling dual last weekend with High Recall showing dazzling early speed from the pink to cut across her sibling and snare the front running position.

Star Recall (pictured, with connections) kept pressing and was at the leader’s heels for the entire race but that only encouraged High Recall to produce her most impressive effort yet and she held on to score by a length in a personal best of 30.21.

Now the Linda Britton-trained duo line-up against each other in Puppy Classic heat 2 (race 5) with Star Recall jumping from box three and High Recall launching from the lemon.

They are separated on the grid by fellow Britton-prepared youngster Gone To Heaven.

Gone To Heaven ripped out wins from her first seven starts but her recent form has been considerably less divine.

She’s missed out in her past four although she did run second behind Hillbilly Flash last start which indicated that she might be working her way back into some sort of form.

Gone To Heaven needs to produce her best otherwise the two Recall dogs will divide up this race between them.

There’s very little to split the two but High Recall has the edge in early pace and she showed last week if she finds the lead she’ll be hard to get around.

Britton also has good prospects in the other two heats.

The strong finishing Petra has the rails alley for heat 1 (race 4) while Bad Memory has gotten his career off to a good start with wins from his first two races and he looks to have plenty of improvement in him.

Fresh from his victory in the Kanyana Cup the in-form Bekim Maxim appears to be the dog to beat in heat 3 (race 6).

Another Team Britton chaser with big claims is Zelemar Fever in the Gibbons Servicing Dept Free To All over 530m (race 7).

The Temlee winner simply can’t be as Bad as she was last week, where she clashed with Dyna Nalin throughout the race and the pair managed to nullify each other into a downfield finish.

Hillbilly Flash returns to Cannington for the first time since the Perth Cup in this race and he’ll be bolstered by his last start win at Mandurah.

The two greyhounds most likely to feature prominently in race 2, a city grade over 715m, have never attempted the journey before.

Luba Monelli has owned the 642m with five wins over the trip and given trainer David Hobby’s track record of converting good dogs into successful stayers she should be able to adapt to the extra ground easily.

The other main fancy, Takahaski, had her winning streak of six come to an abrupt end last week but she was very impressive at her only try over the 642m three runs back where she clocked a notable 37.08.

She has shown more strength than Charles Atlas and is bred to stay so I think she’ll be up to this.

The only other possible chance is Wing It Appeal, a greyhound which has just joined the kennels of up-and-coming trainer James Jefferies.

Wing It Appeal, a regular on the east coast staying circuit, comes into her first race on WA soil having won her past two starts.
