King Sapphire Could Cause A Royal Upset

By Jeff Collerson

Boom greyhound Chica Destacada is an odds-on favourite for race four - a Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg (520m) - at Wentworth Park on Saturday night but trainer Noelene Holloway gives her front runner King Sapphire a chance of causing an upset.

King Sapphire has had six starts at Wentworth Park for two wins and two thirds but has not run a better race than he did when fourth to Crash Model there last Saturday night.

He had a bumping duel for the lead with Here’s Skeeta in the early stages and despite being hampered showed great tenacity to reach the front on the back straight.

The early effort told and after fading to third on the home bend King Sapphire finished fourth.

"I was very happy with that run and King Sapphire is a better dog this week," Noelene said.

"He had box eight last Saturday and I far prefer him drawn inside so box two this week is great.

"King Sapphire once trialled 10.39 for the first section at Gosford and all the regulars there at the time said that was unheard of.

"If he jumps cleanly on Saturday he could pinch a three lengths break going through the turn so they’ll have to run him down."

If King Sapphire does win on Saturday he will gain an automatic start in the heats of the Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg on April 5.

Saturday’s best bet should be Avondale Maurick, who was desperately unlucky when second to Miss Fiction over 720m at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

Avondale Maurick jumped in front from box six last week but was skittled when trying to reach the inside fence at the first turn.

After dropping back to be sixth at the pen Avondale Maurick was still fourth approaching the home turn and flew home to beat all but Miss Fiction.

Avondale Maurick looks far better drawn in box two in Saturday’s sixth event at Wentworth Park.

Invictive and Pride Of Mykonos are two of the fastest beginners in training and are set to stage a speed duel in race eight at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Pride Of Mykonos has box one and Invictive two and whoever leads will be hard to beat.

But while Pride Of Mykonos almost certainly has to lead to win Invictive is capable of coming from second early to score.

While she has won three Wentworth Park races by being first out and first home, Invictive proved she could come from behind when she ran down Here’s Skeeta to score her fourth Wentworth Park win on February 22.

Hersi blew the start when second at Gosford on Tuesday night and only has to begin on terms with his opponents in race three at Wentworth Park on Saturday to notch his second win in three starts at the track.

Hersi missed the jump but railed through to lead on the back straight when he won at Wentworth Park in a handy 30.25 on February 24 and was a distinct last to leave the boxes before finishing second in a nippy 30.16 over 515m at Gosford on Tuesday.
