Chica Destacada Could Be Egg Bound

By Jeff Collerson

Doreen Drynan has never been one to get too carried away by the performances of young greyhounds but the Llandilo trainer admitTed she was thinking Golden Easter Egg after Chica Destacada’s sensational win at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Despite colliding with Evade at box rise, Chica Destacada regained her balance to set off after tearaway pacemaker Fancy Rhythm before grabbing the lead leaving the back straight and winning by more than seven lengths in a best of the night 29.73.

"I’m not sure if Chica Destacada will get a run in next month’s Easter Egg heats but tonight’s win probably makes her a fourth grader so that should help," Doreen said after the race.

Meanwhile, trainer Marty Hallinan will tackle the Maitland Gold Cup with Zipping Tess following the bitch’s sizzling all-the-way win in 29.82 at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Zipping Tess, who led throughout to win the Bathurst Cup on February 24, came out running on Saturday to score by over six lengths.

"There was a lot of pace around Zipping Tess tonight and she had box four so she needed to ping the lids, and she did," Marty said.

"This bitch seems to be getting better with every race and although she will be up against some outstanding sprinters in the Maitland Cup, probably dogs like Boyce Road, you can’t win it sitting at home."

The Maitland Cup heats are on March 20.

Pride Of Mykonos continued a remarkable comeback to racing by leading throughout to score his fifth Wentworth Park win for owner-trainer Fay Wotton in the first Macro Meats Easter Egg Prelude.

Pride Of Mykonos, one of the most consistently brilliant beginners in the business, speared the lids and held off strong finisher Zipping Logan to win by a length in 30.17, close to his personal best of 30.03.

"Pride Of Mykonos dropped a back leg muscle in early November and was sidelined for more than three months," Fay said.

"It’s a really exciting night because my husband MATTHEW couldn’t come to Wentworth Park as he is at home caring for Evangelia, the dam of Pride Of Mykonos, who is in the process of whelping a litter to Billy The Sid."

The kennels of Marie Burton continue to fire after they landed another winning double at Wentworth Park on Saturday with Woods and Soaring Eagle.

Knot Telling Ya and Fancy Rhythm are recent city winners for Marie and while Woods has now won seven races in town, Saturday’s success was only the second in 14 Wentworth Park appearances for Soaring Eagle.

But this dog is vastly improved and followed a near record 18.41 win over the Richmond 330m flutter on Wednesday with an 11 lengths victory in a personal best 30.01 at Wentworth Park.

Miss Fiction’s part-owner Ted Ciszewski almost had to pinch himself to check it had really happened after the Ivan Hanna-trained bitch scored her second Wentworth Park win on Saturday night.

"I bought my first greyhound from Ivan Hanna in the 1980s and until Miss Fiction won on February 22 I had not owned a Wentworth Park Saturday night winner," Ted said.

"Now we have won another one, I feel like I’m in an aeroplane having the ride of my life."

Miss Fiction had filled an exasperating six placings in nine Wentworth Park 720m starts before winning on February 22 and on Saturday she was the $1,000 GBOTA jackpot dog, taking her earnings for the night to $7,000.

And hasn’t Ryan Tredway got a couple of hot prospects in littermates Pad Burner and Little Satisfies.

Pad Burner led throughout at his Wentworth Park debut to win by six lengths in a slick 29.97 while his sister Little Satisfies overcame a slow start to beat all but King Odessa in a nippy 30.05.

See you next week!
