Saint Tifi To Keep It In The Family

By Jess Moran

Garry Edward's kennel-star Double Twist may be off the track with an injury, but her litter sister Saint Tifi will try to continue the family's good run of form at Nowra today.

Edwards will give Saint Tifi her second run in as many weeks when she lines up at Nowra in race six today.

Despite being from the same Where's Pedro-Tifi litter, Edwards admits that it is tough to compare Saint Tifi with her littermate.

"There's a big difference between her and Double Twist. Double Twist just seems to have a bigger ticker than Saint Tifi," he said.

Edwards has only had Saint Tifi in his kennels for a short time since her breeder CHRIS O'Brien made the decision to give her to Edwards to train.

"She started out like a house on fire winning her first career start at Bulli for CHRIS," Edwards said.

"But then she had an average run of performances for a while before CHRIS decided to let me have a go with her.

"A week after I got her she came on season and she's been out since."

Saint Tifi made her return to the track earlier this month, running second at Nowra before recording another place at Dapto last week.

"Her two starts since being back have been pretty decent and she's been trialling well but it's hard to get excited about her when her sister is doing amazing things," Edward's admits.

However, Saint Tifi's future may not lie on the track with Edwards predicting a new role as a mother may be in the near future.

"We had an offer for her from Victoria which unfortunately didn't work out, but my feeling is she is probably going to be mated before Double Twist," he said.

Also on the cards at Nowra is another one of Edward's promising chasers, Big Bounce who will line up from box six in race three.

The greyhound recorded his first win from only three career starts at the track two weeks ago and Edwards hopes his form will continue to improve with age.

"He was probably lucky to win his race last week, but when I trialled him at Nowra last Wednesday he improved on his time in that race by about five lengths," he said.

"He seems to be getting better with more experience so we will just have to see where he goes."

While a lot of his attention has been focused on the track recently, Edwards admits he is keen to see his kennel-star Double Twist back in action.

"She's never been off work since the injury. I walked her for a month and my son has been coming around at 5:30 in the morning before going to work to run with her for about three weeks now.

"I'm taking her to my vet Linda Corney on Tuesday and we will hopefully get the all clear from her. Then we might be able to start free-galloping her again.

"We've probably given her more time than she needed for the injury and it shouldn't take her long to get back to her straps.

While the trainer would have liked for Double Twist (pictured) to take part in the Golden Easter Egg series in April, he concedes that she probably isn't likely to take part.

"The (Golden Easter) Egg is probably just a little too close, but there's no reason why she couldn't get there if she's going good in about two weeks time and trials well.

"Although I don't want to push her too quickly and have her re-injure herself for the sake of coming back a couple of weeks early.

"It's looking like the Ladies Bracelet at Wentworth Park in May is the most likely probability for her first big race back."
