Will It Be Third Time Lucky For Maxie?

By Noel Ovington

Veteran chaser Yo Cool Maxie heads to Maitland this afternoon for his third tilt at the Maitland Supporters Club Gold Collar (400m).

Yo Cool Maxie (pictured, black and white stripe rug) finished second behind his littermate Little Ed in the 2012 final of the Gold Collar before running third in a heat won by Scissor Queen last year, missing a start in the decider.

Despite turning four years old on December 12 last year, Yo Cool Maxie has been burning up the Non-TAB tracks and trainer Barry Evans said he is enjoying his racing too much to consider retirement.

"He'll let me know when he's had enough," he said.

"From his past few starts he's broke the 347m Gunnedah track record and the 365m ARMIDALE track record, and last start won the ARMIDALE Cup over the 520m and was not far off that record either. He ran 30.19 and the record is 30.04 so it shows how well he is racing."

Yo Cool Maxie will contest the fourth and final heat (race nine) of the Gold Collar this evening from box eight.

"Throughout his whole career six and eight have been his best boxes so I'm happy with the draw," Evans said.

"He has been racing well at Gunnedah and ARMIDALE but you have to rely on those clubs getting a free-for-all, and he finished second to his brother in the Gold Collar two years ago so I thought I'd bring him back again and hopefully go one better.

"He may as well have another tilt at the race than sit at home in his kennel."

Yo Cool Maxie will clash with Richmond Cannonball winner Set And Match (box six), who possesses incredible early speed and is racing in career best form..

The first two placegetters from each heat will progress to the $5,000 to-the-winner final on March 6.
