Mullens Hopes Winning Form Continues at Gosford

By Noel Ovington

After a recent bout of kennel cough brought his racing stock to a standstill, Londonderry trainer Clay Mullens was more relieved than anything to train a winning double at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

Fast Archer set the time standard for the night when he speared out from box eight with a 5.36 first section on the way to a 29.61 all-the-way win.

Three races later Rexroth overcame box six to win in 30.10.

Mullens said he used completely different training methods on his two city winners.

"Fast Archer did absolutely nothing through the week and raced really well fresh, whereas I have worked out that Rexroth needs plenty of galloping so that's what I gave him and he was able to win as well," he said.

"I have always had a high opinion of Rexroth and I am slowly starting to work him out. He thrives on hard work."

So Mullens will back Rexroth up in the Aussieports Stakes (race seven) at Gosford tonight, where he will start from box five over the 515m trip, and he is well-placed to make it two wins in succession.

The Mullens-trained What A Player will also contest race six - the Woodport Early Learning Centre stakes over the 600m distance.

What A Player made his middle distance debut at Richmond on February 15 and was impressive beating Ibrox Blackjack in 35.71.

"I want to test him over 700m at some stage but I'm in no hurry," Mullens said.

"He's a very strong dog and as long as his run home times over the middle distance keep improving I don't see why he wouldn't run further."

Tonight's assignment will be a good test for What A Player as he will clash with smart front-runner Fantastic Barb (box six), who has won her past two starts over the 600m at Gosford.

The race has been made somewhat easier with the scratchings of smart chasers Royal Sprite and Za'ma Beauty.
