Bell Is Counting On His Lucky Charm

By Jeff Collerson

Avondale Charm had box six when she won first-up at Wentworth Park but trainer Ron Bell believes the greyhound is "two or three lengths better" from an inside draw.

That should resonate with punters as Avondale Charm has box three in race nine at Wentworth Park on Saturday.

"When she won on January 18 she managed to cross the field from box six," Ron said.

"But at her next Wenty run, from box seven, she had to work hard to get to the fence and finished second.

"The way they are drawn on Saturday she should have a good chance of sitting behind the greyhound in box one, Spirited Journey, in the early stages.

"If she can do that she should be hard to hold off.

"Avondale Charm has had a bit of work at home this week and is looking better than at any time since she came into my kennels."

Fast Archer pulled up well after his Cyril Rowe Gold Plate run at Bulli on Wednesday and has a good chance of turning the tables on final winner Gradence in Saturday’s seventh event.

"I didn’t really expect Fast Archer to win at Bulli but he got a lot of bother from another dog and the interference he suffered ruined whatever chance he had," trainer Clay Mullens said yesterday.

"Fast Archer might still be a run or two short of being ready to clock the 29.65 he ran at Wentworth Park in April but he is better in that he has matured in terms of travelling to the track and keeping himself calm.

"Box eight on Saturday is not a worry because he has won from that draw and he drew eight when he finished second in the final of the New Sensations at Wentworth Park on Golden Easter Egg night, March 30 last year."

In that event Fast Archer began brilliantly from the outside and after being the closest of seconds behind Charmed Assassin going through the catching pen he was beaten less than two lengths by that dog in a brilliant 29.76.

Safest bet on Saturday should be Vinny Kreuger, from the in-form Mark Gatt kennels, in race five.

Vinny Kreuger has box one which is a dream draw because Tarzan Luke (box two) uses a bit of the track while Bessy Boo (box three) usually walks out of the starting traps.

Vinny Kreuger has been runner up in his past two Wentworth Park starts from poor draws, chasing home King Cobber and Supercell in late January in harder races.

His kennelmate Freddy Diesel is good value in race six, despite drawing box four.

The dogs’ previous trainer Mark Azzopardi always rated Freddy Diesel the faster of the pair and on Saturday night Freddy is in a far weaker race than his brother, Vinny Kreuger.
