Jones Declares War In Gosford Mega Maiden

By Noel Ovington

Orange-based Steven Jones has bred some smart greyhounds over the years including recent Group 1 Sportingbet Vic Peters finalist Soviet Missile, and he looks to have another potential topliner on his hands.

The Jones-trained War Room will line up from box seven in tonight's Umina Juniors Cricket Mega Maiden Final (515m) at Gosford after winning his semi-final last week in a smart 29.91.

Although he started from box one last Tuesday night, Jones is not too concerned with tonight's wide draw in the $10,000 to-the-winner decider.

"To be honest I don't think boxes make a great deal of difference to him," Jones said.

"He's a very smart dog and his run home times are good, and so far he has been able to put himself in the race around the first corner.

"All the dogs in the field deserve to be there so it is going to be a very competitive race."

Jones bred War Room (by Mogambo) from a bitch he purchased from a friend.

"I bought San Tan Scuffy off a mate of mine after doing a bit of research on her and it looks like she is going to make it as a broodbitch," he said.

War Room will renew his rivalry tonight with the Robert Smith-trained Lochinvar Impact, who has drawn nicely in box two.

Lochinvar Impact held on to score a narrow win over War Room in a heat of the Mega Maiden before War Room evened the score with a comfortable semi-final win.

From the good draw Lochinvar Impact will be hard to beat again.

Moonshine Pearl took time honours last Tuesday night, winning her semi-final in a fast 29.84 for trainer David Pringle, and although drawn awkwardly in box four has definite winning claims.
