Phenomenal Hoping For A Winning Return

By thedogs.com.au

Sale Cup runner-up Phenomenal will look to return to the winners' circle when he lines up in the Maidment Memorial (595m) at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

The Jason Thompson-trained Phenomenal started odds-on for the Group 1 Sale Cup, but was unable to run down Dyna Nalin in the $75,000 feature.

Phenomenal was then dropped back in distance for the heats of the Cranbourne Cup, but once again was beaten into second place, this time by Keybow.

Thompson then planned to take the son of Collision to Wentworth Park for the heats of the Paws Of Thunder but was scratched after suffering a minor setback.

In the Maidment Memorial on Thursday night, Phenomenal will make his second start over the 595m, having won over the track and distance in November last year.

Standing in his way will be the Glenn Dainton-trained Bookkeeper as well as Norm Rinaldi veteran General Destini, who is coming off a tough win at Wentworth Park last weekend.

The Maidment Memorial is worth $15,000 to the winner and is race eight on the program.

Meanwhile, in the other feature of the night - the Australian Sprint - a crack field of sprinters that includes Paws Of Thunder finalist Peter Rocket will go head to head.

Peter Rocket started from box five in the Paws Of Thunder last weekend and put in a gallant run to finish fifth.

The box Gods have not smiled on the Keith Hellmuth chaser for Thursday night's assignment either, where Peter Rocket will have to jump from box eight - a draw where he has recorded two wins from seven starts.

Cranbourne Cup winner Banjo Boy and Tomac Bale are likely to vie for favouritism in the Australian Sprint, with both greyhounds in good form in the lead-up to this race.
