Cait Rod's Pearl Looks Good At Richmond

By Jeff Collerson
Cait Rod's Pearl gave odds-on favourite Canya Captivate a start and a beating at Richmond last week and is drawn to put in a repeat performance in Wednesday night's Buy Wick Coffee Stakes at the Londonderry track.

Cait Rod's Pearl had box three last Wednesday and after trailing Canya Captivate in the early stages, she finished powerfully to win by two lengths in a smart 29.63.

In Wednesday night's 520m fifth grade Cait Rod's Pearl will be chasing her fourth successive Richmond success, having won in 29.66 and 29.85 before last week's victory.

Trainer Darren Northey said: "She is not exceptionally quick early and likes the inside so box two suits her.

"She worked well up the straight on Monday so is ready to go.

"That wasn't in a trial, but she does around 1200 metres every second day galloping up the straight.

"Cait Rod's Pearl turned two in November and has taken a while to strike top form.

"She is by Feral Franky and I've found with offspring of that dog some of them take time to reach their peak.''

Tiny Reggae Pepper, who races at around 24kg, will be striving to maintain her unbeaten record over middle distances when she tackles Wednesday night's 622m GRNSW Middle Distance Final at Richmond.

Reggae Pepper followed wins over 603m at Gosford and 622m at Richmond with an all-the-way win in her heat last Wednesday.

She clocked 35.89 with fastest qualifier King Of Tulsa taking an early lead to score in 35.61.

Reggae Pepper's trainer Simon Ma said: "King Of Tulsa was very impressive when he had box one last week and while he has box eight in the final, if he finds the fence he will be very hard to beat.

"Reggae Pepper is a one pace type of greyhound.

"She has always been a good beginner but in 520m races at Wentworth Park she didn't have enough early speed to be the pacemaker.

"She has one steady pace and seems to be able to maintain the same speed from start to finish.

"The double lure which is in operation now has helped her a lot.

"Reggae Pepper likes to be able to get to the rails but when there was a single lure more dogs seemed to want to do that and she often got squeezed out.

"With the double lure they seem to be spreading out more evenly and this suits a good railer like Reggae Pepper.''

Totally Emgrand was a fast finishing second from box seven in his heat and moving to box two in Wednesday night's Ladbrokes Blackbook Final, a 520m fifth grade, gives him a good chance.

That's the opinion of trainer Luke Azzopardi, who said: "I thought his run last week was fantastic and he is certainly boxed a lot better this week.

"But it is a very hard race, because Mr Peregrine and Brooklyn Brute were both very impressive in winning their heats last week in fast times.

"So obviously they are going to be hard to toss.''

Mr Peregrine, who won his heat from box five in 29.42, rails well and has drawn box seven while Brooklyn Brute, who will exit box five, was a distinct last to leave the boxes before storming home along the fence to win his heat in 29.88.
