August 2010

Spring is in the air and Greyhounds as Pets will be out and about in the community over the next month.

We have three big events to attend and hopefully we’ll see plenty of people as the weather begins to warm up.

The first of those days will be the Brush Farm Corrective Services Academy 20th Anniversary Open Day on Saturday 4 September from 11am-3pm.

The State Government’s Corrective Services Department have been extremely helpful in allowing greyhounds to be put in foster care at the Dilwynnia Correctional Centre, putting a smile on the face of female inmates at the same time.

There will be plenty to see and do on the day with a host of exhibitions and stalls planned.

The following week Greyhounds as Pets will head to greyhound racing headquarters for the Wentworth Park Games on Sunday 12 September.

To be held from 11am-2pm, the Wentworth Park Games challenges the residents of Glebe and Forest Lodge to take on those from Ultimo and Pyrmont in a day of fun sporting activity.

The novelty sports of gumboot throwing, wine glass racing, Beckham bending and obstacle course are all on the agenda, but that is not the top prize.

The Mongrel Cup will pit the humble family non-greyhound dogs against each other in a winner-takes-all contest. It’s a pity our pups won’t be allowed to compete, but I think they would win by the length of the straight if they were even though all are in retirement!

From all reports the day was a blast last year and we look forward to being involved.

For more information visit www.wentworthparkgames.com.au.

The last of our events for September will be the Richmond College Spring Open Day on Saturday 18 September from 10am-4pm.

The day will have an animal care theme and admission is free.

We hope to see you out and about over the next month.

July 2010

Three of our Greyhounds in foster care headed down to North Avoca Beach for the day to participate in the Five Lands Walk activities.

Cassidy, Red and Spanner enjoyed their beach outing immensely. There was a beautiful kite display and excellent Aboriginal music and dancing.

The dogs’ favourite event of the day was the Coolest Beach Dog competition run by our great supporters, the Avoca Drive Animal Hospital.

Over 50 dogs gathered in the off leash area of the beach and participated in the fun and games. All of the greyhounds were perfectly behaved and interacted with many different people and dogs throughout the afternoon.

Their muzzles caused a lot of comment, but it was a great starting point to educate people about the many positive points of owning a greyhound as a pet.

Check out some of the photos from the day below.

June 2010

Greyhounds As Pets will be very busy over the next few months scheduling appearances at a number of events throughout the state.

They include:

  • 4 September - In conjunction with our Corrective Services fostering programme at Dillwynia, GAP will be taking part in the Brush Farm Corrective Services 20 year anniversary celebrations at Eastwood
  • 12 September - GAP will be attending the Wentworth Park Community Games where the highlight is the Wenty Park Mongrel Cup
We hope to meet as many new people as possible over the next few months and keep educating them about the greyhound breed. Hope to see you there!

May 2010

Avoca Drive Animal Hospital staff helped spread the Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) gospel when they took some of the program’s pups to the RSPCA Million Paws Walk at Gosford on Sunday.

The RSPCA Million Paws Walk is the organisation’s biggest fundraiser of the year and welcomes thousands of dogs who walk across all parts of the country.

Nearly the entire staff of the Avoca Drive Animal Hospital took time out of their weekends to walk some of the greyhounds being fostered in Greyhound Racing NSW's GAP program.

They talked to interested onlookers about the breed while walking some of the greyhounds being looked after by the women’s Dilwynnia Correctional Centre before they are found foster homes.

Dr Liz O’Connor and walk team leader Felicity O’Connor led the charge and the day proved a great success.

April 2010

An innovative program launched by Greyhound Racing New South Wales in conjunction with the State Government’s Corrective Services Department has helped put smiles on the faces of female prison inmates.

Under the Greyhounds As Pets program which re-homes ex-racing greyhounds, up to six dogs at any one time are being cared for by inmates at the women’s Dillwynia Correctional Centre at Windsor.

The program has been very well received by the inmates who care for the greyhounds for up to eight weeks before they are released to their new families.

Corrective Services Minister Phil Costa helped launch the project and said it had made a marked difference to inmates ahead of their release.

Below is a picture from the program's launch.

February 2010

Greyhounds As Pets had a fantastic day at this year’s Mardi Gras fair.

Foster carers, adopters, industry participants and supporters of the program came down to introduce our dogs to everyone and did a wonderful job.

There was considerable interest in our beloved greys with our slogan “supermodels without temper tantrums” as well as their rainbow bandanas causing considerable interest and gaining lots of smiles.

There was also a bit of a celebrity air to this event with one of our adopters, Todd McKenney, coming down to introduce his newly adopted greyhound, Chrissie, to everyone.

The dogs also had their photo taken with Clover Moore (Sydney’s Mayor). I can’t recommend highly enough taking a look at some of the photos from the day – there are some really lovely ones!
