For many people, the prospect of adopting a dog that will be with them for approximately 10 years can be daunting. For others, they are concerned with meeting lots of dogs and adopting ‘the one’. For other people, being a foster carer is an opportunity to contribute to the community and assist us with our goal to find these amazing dogs a new home.
Foster caring with a view to adopt (similar to a ‘try before you buy’ program) is the perfect opportunity for people to take a greyhound into their home on a trial basis. During the 6 week foster period, all the dog’s food is paid for, vet bills covered and support provided by the ‘Greyhounds as Pets’ team. The dogs even come with a manual! If after the 6 weeks the carers decide that this is ‘the dog’, then they can adopt it. If not, Greyhounds as Pets will find it a new home (as we would with any graduating foster dog).
Fostering or ‘try before you buy’ is also a great option for families wondering if the novelty of owning a dog will wear off for the children. A 6 week school holiday break might be just the right time to have a dog on a trial basis.
